Hammer With Replaceable Faces

I just had to make one of these. Steel, Aluminum, Brass, and plastic.
The plastic is polycarbonate and will be replaced with UHMW when my stock arrives.
The handle has an internal cavity for storing a punch. It is made of 304 stainless.
The handle is fluted not knurled like most. The end cap is brass and I think I used
5/16-18 thread for it. The head weighs 10 ounces with the brass faces.

The head is turned form 1" steel and the handle is made from 5/8" 304 stainless.
The head is 2" long and the faces are 3/4" long.
The handle is 9.750 long including the end cap.

I used 3/8-16 all thread for the threaded studs that retain the faces.
The head is threaded onto the handle and can also be replaced if needed and
is threaded 3/8-16 also. Still need to polish out the flutes.

Nicely done. It has very pleasing, artistic lines.

I think you'll be pleased that you fluted, rather than knurled, the handle. Knurls can be uncomfortable if gripped tightly or for extended periods of time.

Also, with our machining capabilities, interchangeable head hammers present the opportunity for variously shaped heads as well as heads of various materials. Some types to ponder...

Chisel-shaped with the "blade" section aligned with the handle or perpendicular thereto; the blade can be relatively sharp or have a distinct flat depending on the application.

Conical frustum to provide a smaller circular face

Another great idea. Thanks Marv, I noticed that the commercially made ball peen hammer has a slight
crown and I may make up some more faces like that. The blade or wedge is a good idea for places that the
hammer head would not fit into. Small tapered ends for tight areas....unlimited possibilities.

Back in the day, they had something I'll refer to as a "timber marking hammer" because I don't know the correct term. Basically, it was a hammer with a relief carving of logo/initials/whatever in the striking face. Smashing it into the cut end of a log permanently marked that log. Think of it as a branding iron that required no heating.

We don't need to mark logs in our shops but the concept of a "marking hammer" may be applicable to some other problem. Texturing material, as is sometimes done to leather, is a possibility.

Again, just ideas to help make your time in the shower more productive. :-)

Thanks Jon, Summer finally broke around here. Now the temps are more in line with winter highs of 72 degrees so it is nice to work in the shop.
Just a bit too warm in the summer out here to spend much time in the shop.
