When using a hacksaw, I find it helps to have a starting guide for the blade to rest against.
I needed to cut the flats on some 1/2" nuts a specific distance from the threads.
To go this I turned a 1/2" nut to 9/16" then clamped a bolt and nut in the vice screwed the nut to be cut down on top of that then screwed the guide on top of that I could then saw the nut where I wanted while keeping the blade against the guide.
