I needed to sew some heavy woven belt so bought a "Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl". It must have been invented well over 100 years ago. It is essentially a manual sewing machine that uses very heavy waxed polyester thread. I bought the awl plus a lifetime buy of thread from Ace Hardware for about $20. YouTube has plenty of videos on how to use this tool.
Uses include sewing canvas, woven belt, paracord, and leather.
