    A Great Sewing Tool

I needed to sew some heavy woven belt so bought a "Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl". It must have been invented well over 100 years ago. It is essentially a manual sewing machine that uses very heavy waxed polyester thread. I bought the awl plus a lifetime buy of thread from Ace Hardware for about $20. YouTube has plenty of videos on how to use this tool.

Uses include sewing canvas, woven belt, paracord, and leather.

My dream is to invent a tool that is as elegant and long-lived as the Speedi-Sticher.

    Daturat100r,

That fork is yet another simple and elegant tool! Seems like something that I could make. Gotta think about it. I don't work in leather so the skiver doesn't excite me as much.

    The next day:
I don't need to make holes, just get the stitch straight and even. I first marked a straight line with a sharp pencil. Then I took a disposable plastic fork and dipped the tines in an ink pad. Push the tines onto the pencil line and it is all marked out. To mark more points, just align the last dot of ink with the first tine of the fork.

You can see that my spacing is good but I'm not staying on the line. I think I'm jumping above and below a cross-thread. I should be using my Optovisor plus need to develop more skill.

    Thanks,

    Rick

How to sew using a 'Speedy-Stitcher':

Those Speedy-Stitchers are one of the most useful inventions ever. In these trying times here are are a couple of good sites with the odd free pattern.

Just tension adjustment to get stitch in middle of fabric ,bit harder the thinner the material but the more you do the better the results. Its not so hard in sole leather but harder to push thru
