BTW, cost comparison: I just bought about 100 pounds of hot roll steel for about $115.

five sticks (6 meter) of 25 x 25 x 3 angle, 5,640 rubles = $97.87 USD
1 stick of flat 40x4mm, 1026 rubles, = $17.80 USD
cut them all in half to fit on car, 100 rubles = $1.74

Anyway, started building the workbench for the lathe. Maximum size without running into the milling machine table. Since there's radiators along the wall the lower shelves will be made inset so the table fits over the radiator. Gives 13 cm more depth, any further forward and it will run into the mill table. Will do something similar on the other side of the mill, but have to wait for the X motor to arrive so I can see how much room I have. I'd like to mount the bench grinder over there.

Anyway, here's the basic frame, more work tomorrow. It was raining which was fine until the wind came up and blew rain under the roof.

Here's the milling machine, working but still waiting for the X-motor and real handwheels. These are 3d printed. But, it works.



And the bench for the lathe. We had to pause construction as we were "invited" to a meeting with some government officials in the regional capitol.

Hopefully today we add the metal top and get this inside. Still need to buy more wood for the lower shelves. The shelf inset on the back it to clear a radiator. The smaller inset on the front is to clear legs.



Yesterday we started the summer classes with one glitch. A new law in this region apparently due to our proximity to the Special Operation... foreigners are no longer allowed to teach anyone under 18. So, classes just got smaller. We were hoping for the 15 or so and up students but there's still legal adults to teach.

Today we cut the sheet metal for the top of the lathe bench and brought it inside.

I had welded nuts on the bottom of the legs for adjustable feet





Remove wheels and level

We need to buy more wood for the lower shelves. The shelves are indented to clear that radiator even with the table against the wall.

The mill needs to move left by a bit, it's not in exactly it's final place. But it has to be moved when we finish the floor and baseboards, my wife is currently painting the room. Might as well get drips on the concrete and not the final floor.

As promised, pictures of the lathe installed. It's now bolted down and I've even used it once today, I had to round a shaft.

The table is nice and sturdy in the front to back direction but has a little sway in the left-right direction. I guess it's so long the horizontal members are flexing. When we pull it out to finish the floor and baseboards I'll add a simple diagonal brace on the back.

I'll be adding a coolant pump to this, already have the parts but that can wait until the rest of the shop is set up.

Oh yes, soon to go on the lathe is a DRO, you can see the scale for it standing in the corner behind it. Just a single axis, the cross feed would get complicated and that's easy enough to monitor manually.

How are the prices on steel and lumber there? The price has come down a little here W NC, USA a 2x4x8 was a little over $5.00 last week, it was over $10.00 a few months ago.
