Next project: Use a sensorless brushless ESC to turn that alternator into a 3 phase motor. Hybrid dirt bike. Alternators are supposedly halfway decent little motors. You can get 3 or 4 horsepower out of them, which is probably about a +30% boost on what that little 150cc gas engine can make. You would definitely feel that on the butt dyno.

Very creative. A major issue with people hooking up inverters is lack of understanding in regard to input current requirements.

That 4000 watt inverter, at full load, will pull in excess of 300 AMPs with 12 volts of input current. Input conductors should be AWG 4/0. That alternator only outputs 90 amps maximum. The input cables maybe #6 or 8. The set up will work for low wattage loads, but will start melt things with much higher loads.

But, it may serve his needs very well.

On the go-kart, I am going to guess the battery post melted due to a bad connection. High resistance is created with a bad connection, which creates heat. The guy seems very knowledgeable in regard to electrical issues, but he seems to have missed this important point.

If you watch how he made the internal connections , soldering each wire, then holding them together and adding solder is not a good practice either. There should be a GOOD mechanical connection before adding solder.

The concept is cool, I had no idea an alternator could be made into a motor. But, now that I do, if I every get around to making one, it will have good electrical connections.
