Post *1 Enlarged version of a bench tapper; a low power electric motor powering a reduction box, identical CW-CCW friction drive. Those are usually a cone shaped hub of rubber, slip-fit axle rides in pillow blocks. Operator pushes part to engage CW clutch plate, driving tap, usually processing a through hole. As tap achieves depth, tap reverses simply by pulling back on part, engaging opposite clutch plate.
For small taps, part is guided on a rod, but still hand held. Unclear if they are shop-made, a commercial device or both, which I suspect is the case.
The GIF is a mechanized fly-press. They use multi-start threads, commonly 3 or 4 pitches.
