One of the reasons would be while it is nearly white hot it has almost zero tensile strength if you were to insert the overheated metal into the machine instead of being able to draw the shape and add the twist it would just part in two. another reason if by allowing the metal to cool the temperature throughout the bar stabilizes to a consistent heat. but the biggest reason was what I first mentioned.
