My forge is 30Inches in diameter made to burn coal charcoal or wood It takes about 4 times as much charcoal to heat something as it does coal not because the BTUs are tremendously lower than coal it not but because charcoal burns so much faster than coal and will ignite every chunk if the forge whereas with coal it will mainly only burn where the air is being forced over it and will die out soon after the air supply is shut off. this makes it easier to concentrate your heat into one area. The same with wood it takes a lot of wood is that is the fuel you are forging with the larger the fire the better.
For the task of straightening the H link from the excavator I had to use charcoal simply because there is no coal in this part of the country, And I hadn't bought any to be shipped in. Charcoal and wood expel a 100 times mire cinders and sparks than coal Thus these must be contained This is the hood I made but had to complete the straightening job so couldn't take the extra time to line it for heat retention or to make it easy to lower or remove for adding more fuel There is always the next time
