in my brigades, that maneuver is done with three people, often 5. 2 shielding sprays (one person on each branch), often backed by a second person due to the reaction force, with the shielding sprays overlapping, and a single person in the middle who actually turns off the gas supply. The shields are extended forward, rather than the person reaching through the shield to isolate the fuel source.

Same for us in the Navy. We also had a 'snorkel' a bent extension about 4' long with a fogging nozzle. Main intended use would be shipboard passageways, the fogman spraying ahead, up and over hose team charging the door.
While accidents and casualties occur, they are quite low compared to amount of people and materiel preserved.
