    Wouldn't throwing ice melt down be easier and a whole lot safer? The way he did it was interesting but the ice will just re-form in a few minutes.

    Yes. I bet that fire didn't even touch the ice. It momentarily melted the top 0.1mm, which immediately refroze. This is basically a Zamboni machine. It just made the ice on his driveway smoother.

    Edit: When I was growing up we used to go out on frozen lakes and light absolutely MASSIVE bonfires, which would burn for four or five hours while everybody sat around and drank. The ice underneath the fire was always perfectly intact.
