It is sort of the correct word....
Pulled - VERB pulled (past tense) · pulled (past participle) "exert force on (someone or something) so as to cause movement toward oneself."
The excavating and unbolting of the flanges etc, simply reduced the amount of force required to pull them up out of the ground.
