Thanks for reminding me how old I am getting
Back 27 years ago, I worked in industrial hygiene, mainly providing engineering solutions in noise, ventilation and industrial safety. We used to get a number of calls from fire stations concerned about particulate and NOx emissions from diesel exhaust. Particulate emissions are a problem in diesel since the particle size is very small resulting in deep lung penetration. Most firemen sleeping quarters were above the truck bays.
Anyway, we used to recommend this system for the trucks. Some stations were limited on funds (as most are), ended up making their own makeshift systems. I wish I had some photos (cell phones did not have cameras then).
Our local fire stations use a similar system to that for the same reasons. They also keep supplied compressed air hose to the air brake systems so they don't have to wait to build up pressure before leaving the station. They employed a "break-away" type air fitting which they did not have to disconnect. Well one time it did not release as expected. They looked back and the station air compresser was bobbing along down the street about 50 or 60 feet behind the fire engine.
