Please be gentle, I'm asking in ignorance. Why are they filling up every other one instead of just going straight down the line?

The only thing I can think of is they are going to use a different color stone to create a more appealing look

Maybe they are coming back with a different color(or shape) of rock to add aesthetic diversity to the design?
