Ralph, Exactly is a bit variable because of all the development and uses over ~60 years. Basically it is a nano particulate magnetite and some type of oil (colloid), developed by a NASA scientist (Steve Papell in 1963) for use as a liquid rocket fuel. It has come a long way since.

It's an interesting rabbit hole, at least to me. A good start is on Wiki.
