Growing up in the San Joaquin Valley in the 50's & 60's, a lot of farmers used a similar method.
The difference was the dams they used had a handle across the top, that stuck out a bit. You could pick it up by the handle and swing it down like an axe into the irrigation ditch. They stuck a lot firmer than this one, never needed a prop on the down stream side.
Although sternly warned that we could chop a toe off if we played with them, we still did.
