Hard to drop anything on your feet if it is already on the floor,
I don't know if anyone has ever done a real statistical analysis of workplace injuries of shops like these versus shops where there are safety nazis positioned on every isle, but having worked in an visited many workshops similar to many of the ones posted here. I have seen far more serious injuries in a full on OSHA regulated factory than in any of the less than considered safe workshops. I would say it is probably due in part to these shops use an age-old apprenticeship program which is almost unheard of in modern workplaces
Never try to tell me it can't be done

Apply grease before pint, or apply pint before grease. That is the question.

Does anyone know how the trade in steel from broken ships works? Do fabricators over there order 10,000 pounds of 1/2" and just get random hunks of hull from their metal supplier, or are these affiliate businesses of the breaking companies, or...? I kinda figured all the steel from those ships went straight to a smelter, but apparently not.

I think one of their crusty welds attaching the ram to the press plate broke, and they were fixing it mid-press. Whoever edited this together probably didn't realize that wasn't part of the process. Or judging from the welds, this might be something they do have to do every time they run the press!

It works just the same as, if you or I went to a scrap yard and rummaged around for bits of scrap we think we can use for our projects. One big difference is the volume available and the way you can acquire it. You can go to where a ship is being broken and bid on whole sections or partial areas if you are a larger bulk buyer.
There are literally 1000s of tons of useable plates beams pipes and other structural members on a ship, not to forget the mechanical systems such as pumps valves blowers wiring and just about everything else. It is far more profitable and a better use of resources to sell these items as they are to possible reuse or to be made into other things than to simple smelt everything down. Smaller buyers will purchase smaller quantities from the larger ones, until eventually the scraps wind up smelted down and made into something entirely new and different. Far better than the policy of the US government does many times with decommissioned navy vessels of towing them out to sea and sinking them.
