is it fair to presume that each roller has small holes (like a screen printing screen) with a thin sleeve over it to block/open some of the holes? I presume the ink is then carried inside the roller to come out onto the fabric.

I worked on a print machine for over 20 years. This is a Stork printer it has a squgee inside that presses the dyes out (called color in the print shop),I worked on a Zimmer machine it has a stainless steel rod inside the screen and a electric magnet under the belt. These are what we called lacquer screens they are made from nickel screen coated with lacquer the patern is cut in the lacquer with a lazer.or the old way with a negative and photo sensitive coating that hardens when exposed to light.A zimmer can print up to 18 colors at a time. The screens are .004 inches thick and very sharp when broken.

Thanks 69GTO for the explanation - understanding how things work is the first step to being able to borrow ideas for other applications.

There is a company, named Spoonflower, with a factory in Durham, NC (& Berlin, Germany) that does fabric and wallpaper printing on an ink-jet technology. Over a million designs on their website, or you can upload your own. Pretty awesome.

Disclaimer: My daughter works there in operations. Uncompensated endorsement here.
