Sure you could make one, but this is dang easy. Can't sell you a plan, just the idea.
Measure bore of spindle. Is it in one of the ranges of; 1 1/8 - 1 3/4, 1 1/2 - 2 5/16, or 2 1/8 - 3 1/4? Next stop at auto parts store, HFT, or other retailers for a (wait for it..........)
TAILPIPE EXPANDER. A socket that fits the expansion bolt, a long [or in case of my lathe loooong] extension bar and tee handle.
The loooongest extension wasn't, connecting two was flexible and heavy to manipulate. So I made one from intermediate conduit; milled a 1/2 sq. drive for the socket and pressed a rod through other end for tee handle.
Became easier to 'find' the hex down hole with a nylon washer around the conduit for alignment. I put a over-square round biscuit in front for items with a hole larger than the bolt.
As we have a variety of lathes, this won't be quite so labor intensive for some.
After awhile, the o-ring holding it together decayed from oil. Replaced with small extension spring cut to length, and looped to fit snug when expander is relaxed.
Speaking of lathes.
