the nasty proof the filter has never been changed throughout the life of the vehicle. if the filter is that bad then the rest of the inside of the engine is going to be equally as bad

    Why on earth..........
Either negligent owner or very linear-focused; who'll bet he scoured the underside for a filter can?

That has to be the best filter placement ever!

    Is that from a diesel?

I once opened up a filter from a Nissan V6 that hadn't had the oil/filter changed for 27,000 KMs. I was pleasantly surprised to see how clean the filter was, I had expected a lot more dirt in it than there actually was.

I know this doesn't apply to Nissan, but some manufacturers have ridiculously long oil and filter change intervals. If I paid attention to the manufacturer's guidelines for my car (I don't) and changed my oil at 27,000 km, I would only be 2,850 km over the recommended interval. And my filter would still be good for another 21,300 km.

Needless to say I don't listen to the manufacturer.

Edit: One model newer and they increased the oil change interval from 15,000 miles (24,150 km) to 20,000 miles (32,200 km). So if my car was a bit newer and I hadn't changed the oil in 27,000 km, I'd still be good for another 5k!
