Of course making our own tools is what this site is all about, I said that previously, I also said send me a picture of one, I never seen one, I don't know what they look like, I wouldn't know one if i seen one, I don't know where to start, give me an idea, I'm not a gun smith, I'm a tool and die maker

Hi Doug. I had to go look them up too and found a couple of pictures.

I have been interested in the rifling techniques for a while but would never attempt creating a cutter for a fire arm barrel. I believe the buttons are mainly used on pistol barrels. Most of these are made from carbide to boot and coated. Not sure what kind of grinder/cutter/fixture could be used but would guess these are sintered and then ground to tolerance. The number and twist of groove would be the difficult part with any accuracy, IMHO.

And yes you are: A great tool and die maker! Although I did like that 50BMG you made...or was that you? UhRa & Wow again!

Thanks for all you bring to this great forum Doug. ~PJ

I'll giddily pay penance for all the fun we have here. Besides, Wiz's never cease to exist they just transmutate and it takes a lot of alpha particles. Just the best! ~PJ

The Wiz is going nowhere, never fear! Really good discussion, guys, on the various rifling techniques and the advisability of a beginner undertaking the fabrication of a carbide button. You all keep on keepin' on - your presence and contributions are greatly appreciated!
