Man! This is way more complicated than I thought.
Back in Newport, I just barfed up “EVLM H. VUES” on the Weapons Systems CT and passed with high marks.

What's "EVLM H. VUES"? I did a Google search but I can't find it. I can guess for some of those, but most I'm at a loss.

It's a mnemonic device "they" used to teach the names of the EM bands to a class of dumb liberal arts grads fresh out of school, i.e., Extremely low frequency, Very Low frequency, Low frequency, etc., etc.

Though, now that I look at the actual names, it looks like I switched the order of SHF and EHF; so make that "EVLM H. VUSE." Still, not bad for 40+ years later. Not bad, that is, for the technique, not me. I'm just a dog that got trained a phrase four decades ago and can't shake it to this day. Like ROY G. BIV and SOHCAHTOA.

Yup, I had already figured out Extremely Low, Very Low and Medium. I lost it somewhere around the middle. And I'm not used to any frequency being called "super." I'm not a radio guy though. I'm sure the HAM operators would laugh at me.

    Extremely Low
    Super Low
    Ultra Low
    Very Low

    High

    ESUVLM H VUSE?

Sure, but good luck with that one! How many people do you know named, "ESUVLM?"

    Honestly.

More seriously, however, I'm guessing it was OK to feed us the abridged, or "dumbed down" version, for expediency's sake. The objective was less to make us EM spectrum experts, so much as to make us functional, or conversant with the OSes, RMs, and EWs, we were going to be working with - who likely did know the more complete list with the finer slices. You call up to the bridge on the 1MC while you're transiting the Strait of Hormuz and tell the watch officer you're getting lit up with fire control radar, it's probably not the best time to have to walk him through basic EMF nomenclature.

Of course, I'm reaching back to when Jane's was published in hard cover and before NTDS meant Neglected Tropical Diseases, so... grain of salt.
