One of the biggest issues is that a small cell internal to the battery pack can fail and once it starts failing, the heat rises rapidly which causes nearby internal cells to over heat and then the reaction cascades. I have been told that once the first cell goes, the reaction is self sustaining.

They aren't really zero emissions even if they don't catch fire unless they are recharged with wind, hydro or solar power. All these people driving around feeling smug about saving the planet (which doesn't need to be saved) not realizing that coal or natural gas is very likely being burned to make the electricity that they are using.
Stupid is forever, ignorance can be fixed.
