why have the cup/pad of the pliers be so "spiky"? I wouldn't think there would be that much risk of the pad slipping if it were round/concave, but someone went to a lot of trouble to make it that shape.

    Thoughts?

I never saw a set with that spikey thing on them. I never really liked those clunky tools anyway. Just used a good pair of regular pliers. Maybe if you did drum brakes all day, every day, you would benefit from a special tool.

A long handled screwdriver did that job for a lot of years for me, whenever the brakes on a tri-axle trailer needed repairing.

In the old days we didn't have the spikey wheel thing - we just found a recessed rivet hole a put the hook end of the plier in there. (Shows how old I am, that was even before bonded brake shoe lining!)

Probably to try to convince people they need to buy a new tool instead of cutting one foot off of an old set of locking pliers (which is exactly what I'm going to do).
