Rather than being unaware it looked to me like he was trying to locate a place to get off the road, he had his door open quite a way, until he got slowed down enough to survive exiting the rolling vehicle

Looks like he saw too many movies and thought he was a stunt man. Lets see, I have a vehicle on fire....my problem, lets turn this situation into something much worse and jump out of the vehicle and see what happens. Maybe it can run into another vehicle or a structure and let it become someone else's problem.

There is a possibility that he had no brakes and therefore no choice?

There is always a choice. Down shift, emergency brake, slam it into park, shut off the engine, etc. Reality is that most people do not think ahead for a what if situation. While in an emergency is not the time to think about these things for the first time. To his credit, it did appear to slow down and possibly stop, so maybe he took some preventative action.

Slamming any automatic into park at any speed will most likely just shear off the park pawl. Putting one in reverse would be the next option but many vehicles with electronic shift control, or sensing (almost all automatics after 1998) may or may not allow the transmission to go into reverse while still rolling forward. Applying the E brake would probably be the best option if you are considering bailing out before the vehicle stops, but not applying it so hard as to lock up the rear wheels, Anti lock systems would not normally be tied to the E brake so locking up the rear tires would cause loss of control.
For all we know he may have been trying to slow down enough to jump out before the flames completely engulfed the cabin area. He may have switched off the ign and applied the E brake since the car did stop.

Yep much easier to prevent being burned alive if the fire is still driving away from you
