    Why call it directional it is not steerable, has to return to where it started.

    Because the machine that bored the horizontal hole is called a directional drill. the drill probe bit is steerable to a degree by a device a guy holds while walking above the drill bit he can make it go up or down and keep it traveling in the intended direction. This one appears to be about 24 to 30 inches in diameter. the one I made for a contractor was much smaller
