There is typically a guy following the head of the drill string with a sensor. The sensor communicates with the drill head and the boring machine to control depth and direction of the bore. It is foolish and dangerous to run one blind like that. Also very costly.

Have you guys watch this type of horizontal boring in action? The head is an angled piece of steel which is spun or pushed at varying clock positions to “steer” it which is why there’s usually someone following the head. Doesn’t mean this isn’t fake but the head is the only part of the string which looks odd…
I am thinking this video is real.
I have had some fun conversations with Horizontal Directional Drillers while on job sites. I have heard a few stories where the transmitting device was lost from the tip of the drill string. Apparently it happens more than you would want since they often carry a spare. At $15,000 - $20,000 each would would not want to lose very many!!!!!!
It is difficult to imagine how the video situation happened, but try to imagine the transmitter "falling out" of the drill head. The locator would be locked in onto the now stationary transmitter. The drill string would then continue with with no guidance. It could go anywhere.
The most difficult thing for me to grasp is how the machine operator could continue to add numerous 10' sections of drill pipe while the locator never moves? Someone messed up big time.
There are different types of heads for HDD depending on the substrates being encountered.
For hard rock
For softrock
For dirt
For Ford Explorers the the suggested technique is to use a rock head to grind through the plastic parts.

Ok hemmjo, that last video did not look fake at all. Thanks!

More evidence of a not flat earth.
All this could be done with pipe bushings, street ell's, 90°'s and close nipples.
Best of all, first video. Listen as the Hispanic rolls those rrrrrrr's, about 0.9'' in.
Last night, joked with a waitress as I ordered Birria Jalisco, and we gringos not so adept at pronunciation. She launched a 4 second course in speech.
Later, she served dinner, with the warning (predating the hot McD's coffee version, by decades) "the plate is hot" she says.
After devouring entire plate, she returns to collect plates, I said "Peligro, es muy frio".
I thought she was going to have a seizure from laughing.
Sincerely,
