Two remarks...

Very few electronic calipers are coolant proof. We don't know if that is what caused the original damage but be sure to avoid it in the future.

You don't use the thumb wheel to make precision measurements with calipers; doing so cocks the jaws which should be parallel to the object being measured. Close the jaws on the object by gently pinching them with the left thumb and forefinger. Also, close the jaws completely by pinching and zero the readout before making a precision measurement.
