    Die Nut Direction

Hi all, would like to throw one out there. When hand threading is there a correct side of a die nut to use, I was once told to start from the opposite side to the size branding. I have always used them this way, is there any truth to this or not.

    Regards
    Geoff

Most dies have a tapered lead-in section on one side. Closely examine a die for a larger size thread and you'll see that the lead-in on one side is different from that on the other.

Start the die using the tapered lead-in.

Don't trust the branding to determine which is the correct starting side. While it might work for certain makes of dies, I don't believe it's an established standard in the industry.

BTW, if you're threading up to a shoulder first run the die in all the way having started from the tapered lead-in side, then reverse the die and chase up to the shoulder to provide a nearly completed thread.
