If one needs to accurately check dimensions on a number of parts with widely varying sizes, twirling a micrometer barrel in and out repeatedly can become tedious. Faced with such a task, I made a DI inspection gage "thing" I could carry to the job more conveniently than a DI mounted on one of those little granite slabs.
The anvil placement is adjustable and, with a variety of DI points, can be a handy tool in all sorts of places.
