Sadly, I’ve had 4 implants done and there are a few steps missing from this video in my case. The surgeon removed the bad tooth and packed the socket with a sterile white powder made from cadaver bone. This enabled my jaw to regrow in this area. Then they used an in-office CT scanner to map out the bone channels that carry nerves. They do not want to hit any of them. With a 3D model of my jaw on a monitor, the surgeon drills the series of concentric holes to accept the socket. The entire process took 9 months and was around $5,000 per tooth including the new tooth which was done by my dentist. Each tooth needs special care.

My surgeon told me if a person smokes, the implant will fall out so he doesn’t accept smokers as patients.

You say "sadly", in the end was the work successful? Was it worth the time and money invested?

Absolutely yes. I would hate to wear dentures or have big gaps in my teeth. It just pains me to think what nice machine tools I could have bought for $20,000.

Every implant started as a tooth with a root canal. I have a few root canal’s yet to fail but expect it to happen.

Great to hear, I'm planning some work (I broke two teeth that had a fillings on a piece of bone in a chain hamburger) and the GIF was he same stuff the insurance adjuster sent me.

I am lead to believe $20,000 worth of tools is minimal compared to dental structure and long term health.

Yeah, you’re right about health. Still pains me.

I've had one implant done. Very much like Rick described, and at the same price. But I got a bonus operation, called a "sinus lift" to ensure the implant didn't penetrate into my sinus cavity. Although my dentist warned me it wasn't optimal, I am a smoker and it's been about 3 years, no issues yet.

About 10 years ago an implant specialist told me I would need a bone graft to increase the basement in order to fill the space in my upper jaw with an implant. He quoted me a few thou for the work. At the same time I was considering purchasing a new Mig 175 with spool gun and plasma cutter. I opted to fill the floor space in my shop with the welding items, rather than fill the space in my mouth... never looked back.
