They used to make (and maybe still do) what they call a Double Happiness paddle. Hard abrasive on one side and soft rubber on the other. I never was any good at ping pong but my brother was very good. There was a Chinese guy who came to the rec center where we would hang out. He had a Double happiness and he and my brother would play. They were pretty evenly matched.
