    Why? is it to destroy the crop too late (or too manky) for harvest, and chip it for turning into the soil? they obvioulsy do this often enough to build a machine to do it - jsut don't understand the why...

    Don't understand that either. Seems you would not need to pick it too compost it. Why not just turn plant and gourd over? They look on the big side also.. not for human consumption.. we like ours smaller and tenderer.

    It seems nearly an entire crop was grown for the purpose of composting it back into the soil. Perhaps this was done to raise or lower the PH of the soil or adding nitrogen and other nutrients. Chipping the vegetables would quicken their decomposition while increasing the overall coverage area.
