    He's lucky there wasn't a hydraulic "lock".
I had a Honda 250 dirt/street bike when our son was about 4 or 5. One morning when I went to start it to go to work, the kick-stater just stopped dead.....'bout broke my leg !
Drove the pickup that day and later on, when I attempted to find out the reason for the sudden stop, I pulled the plug and the cylinder was full of water.
WTH ?? It became apparent that our "little boy" thought the exhaust pipe needed some water......so he filled it up.
Scolded him a bit, and told him not to do that! The little sh*t did it again about 3 days later.....had to do a little more than scold that time.

I bent two connecting rods on my YZ250 by 1) driving it through a swamp and 2) driving it in heavy rain.

Washing out exhausts is fine, as long as the drain holes aren't blocked...

If known that water was present, seems more effective to stand or hoist it partially. Tough to blow water up hill.
