They actually had weighted bags of sand to add counter balance on the thing? What's wrong with retracting the boom once you had the boat in the air before attempting anything else? If you feel your butt start to rise cable down and retract as hard as you can you may get lucky.

Looks like a few extra bags may have helped!

Looks like they knew ahead of time that the load exceeded the capacity of the crane. I guess you can do that if you have the money laying around to replace the boat because their insurance company isn't going near that claim! The "counterweights" on the back of the crane are a damning testament to that fact.

I have already posted a photo of just this sort of thing on another thread (within homemade tools) where in excess of 25 people were standing on the cab end of the crane. that would equate to about 1.5 tons of extra counter weight
Bottom line? the crane driver is incompetent, he could have jibbed in a long time before it got anywhere near disaster, there was bags of room to lower the boat closer to the dock.

Mission Accomplished! The crane motor must have aspirated oil rather than pumped it at one point but the boat is in the water and the crane can drive away to another job.

I seriously doubt that the boat escaped unharmed.
