And that is a prime example why a spreader bar is recommended for lifting long objects requiring two or more slings

I've never used a crane to lift a boat, or anything else. But, I would have used an extra strap, or two to, easily, prevent this eventuality. And, people riding the load? Perhaps, they were on for counterbalance? Geesh!

At a boat club marina where I was adding and extension to their docks and sea wall The harbor boys hauled sail boats in and out of the water on a daily basis They always used their H frame spreader though to prevent damage to the gunnels of the yachts Due to the radical contours of the hulls though especially on the larger boats they would send a diver to add straps tying the lifting straps to each other so they could not slip off the ends of the hulls Eiding the load was common practice though More to be aware of possible damages to the yachts which could be caused by the slings against railings of the rigging lines supporting the masts when it was not possible to step them and store them in the horizontal position. Stressing the rigging lines were of a huge concern as you might imagine
