While it looks cool, it would eventually annoy the crap out of me having to go thru that process every time I wanted to go down or upstairs when it's closed.

But if you really want to create the illusion having a dark brown 3 sided rectangle and a light colored wood is nothing more that the floor you would need to do the whole floor with some pattern which actually makes the stairs and the floor appear to be equal
