    I see in my mind a pile of people on the ground after falling the last 10-15 feet from that wimpy ladder at the bottom

    Seriously, they go to all that trouble making that fancy thing and finish it off with a treacherous thing like that. They must have run out of time or money or something.

    Agreed. The escape should be over a solid wall, not an opening. Then you could mount a permanent ladder directly under the escape opening.

    Imagine if you will! Resetting that entire escape. Assume you have to start at the lowest level and raise it up and lock it in place with the next higher unit and keep going up until all are reset. Is it even possible to trip the escape from a level that is not the uppermost? I also imagine it is pretty noisy in the opening sequence.
    So once a year it probably needs to be tested and then several hours are needed to reset it?
    Just sayin!

    Maybe the noise and the building shaking as that thing deploys is part of the fire alarm system. It would certainly wake people up!!!
