    Construction of 80/20™ or similar extruded aluminum is best for this sort of project, light yet rigid, easily fabricated, a little costly but labor saving.
    Linear guides; no better choice, lots of full size machine tools use them.
    Winning feature in opening pic; widely spaced spindle bearings and doubled at the head; lots of full size machines look proportionally too short.
    Also, he didn't scrimp on carriage width, lots of full ......yaddy-ya do not!
