Chuck jaw back plate: in front

Tom: you demonstrate a 4 jaw "step plate" (my term) in a video. The aluminum fixture is used when trying to hold a part that can not be held by the whole depth of the jaw. After band sawing the form, you drilled and tapped 4 screws holes and put Allen screws in the holes. Why?

Do the screws act as stop of some kind?

I liked the idea so much I made two of them so I could stack them or have two individual depths. But I didn't put the tapped holes in them. Could you tell me their purpose?

    Thanks, Ken
