That could have turned our really badly.

When I was a kid. Little, do not recall the age, maybe 5-7 range. We went to the zoo. They had a machine where you could by peanuts in the shell to give to the elephants. This was back in the 50's when there was not all the safety restrictions etc. I was giving elephant peanuts one at a time. Hold one out, he (maybe it was a she, I did not check) would grip it with the tip of his trunk, put it in his mouth, then reach back for another. I still had a few in my hand, and for some reason I closed my hand. Not sure what either of us was thinking, but he did not like when I closed my hand. He quickly gripped my wrist with his trunk. Not hard, did not hurt. But my dad responded by hitting the trunk. By that time I had opened my hand just from the surprise of being held by an elephant. The peanuts fell out on the ground. The elephant let go, but did not like my dad hitting him. He pushed my dad back, kind of like you or me swatting a flea. Then blew elephant snot all over my dads shirt. Then began picking up the spilled peanuts. We had so many laughs about that over the years.

Just FYI, DON'T EVER get an elephant to blow is nose on your shirt. Elephant snot REALLY STINKS. Especially on a hot day.

I thought he fell off doing a steeplechase type event and landed on his head. That's the way I heard it, but then again that was a while ago and I could just be full of "it".

A horse that rears over backwards, especially with a saddle, often breaks its back at the peak of the withers. Anyway, the animal is very dangerous and should never be ridden! Time to send it to the slaughter house.

I think you are correct, when inthegroove commented, he was probably refereeing to her not landing on her head, My comment was aimed towards the weight of the horse crushing her and possibly breaking her back and probably some ribs as well, meaning she could have sustained permanent injuries.
stevechard_csi has a point that horse is a danger to himself and anyone who attempts ridding him.

Kid was inside the electric fence. Elephant could have done the kid serious harm. This was a warning. Stupid kid. Stupid parents maybe. Some kids have a knack for getting into trouble. Good thing it was a warning. Elephants have very strong trunks.

I had a friend of mine have this happen to her. Horse lover. Something spoked her horse and it went down on her like that. Broke her low back 2 levels, crusher her pelvis, and one femur. With modern medicine she can walk again but has constant pain and cannot ride any more. She says she misses it real bad.
