My uncle's Stradivarius cello has some beautiful mechanisms! Certainly not the 6 for $6 variety.

If it's got to be strong try base tuning machines, I'm an old base player for many years and I have often thought of these for my large scale model ship building! They would work great for a scale tugboat winch drive and exc!

I made a small rotary table for my Proxxon Mill using a guitar machine...

Another source is from onld CD & DVD drives, althougj the mechanisms are fabricated from plastic.

If you can get your hands on some early floppy drives, some had brass worms.

Makes me think of using them as winch-like clamping devices. Anchored well, spooling 80 pound test braided Dacron to a capstan will offer serious pulling force, to any shape.
