A friend and former neighbor of mine worked in maintenance at a Chrysler Plant near St. Louis. He said all of a sudden the company began to get reports of spotwelds not holding on some vehicles. They traced it back to two ladies who worked on the line controlling the robotic welders. Apparently they decided to "turn the volume control down so they could talk over it better." Needless to say, the controls were removed and placed internally after that.

worked eight hour shifts fiddling dials on a machine the purpose of which was not known to them to produce a product unknown to them and its ultimate purpose equally mysterious. To say their job was boring would be gross understatement. They kept themselves engaged with their work by gossiping. They were even encouraged to do so since their bosses quickly realized that relieving the tedium was essential to producing the product.
