I'm just guessing here. First thing is to recognize that iron castings like this need hot melt and need it now. That's why there are so many cylindrical attachments. They have to do with sprues, runners, pour temp, freezing, and crystallization. They get cut off before final machining in the end. Just a guess.
Looks very similar to a brake master cylinder and caliper.

The smaller piece looks like a master cylinder that has been cast but not yet drilled, bored, and tapped. Was your friend into building cars or car components?
