Casting identification help

Hi All
i hope someone can identify the casting in the photos. I am currently clearing a friends workshop and came across these castings in a box together. Would like to know what the project was going to be. I thank you all in advance for your time and any input.

I'm just guessing here. First thing is to recognize that iron castings like this need hot melt and need it now. That's why there are so many cylindrical attachments. They have to do with sprues, runners, pour temp, freezing, and crystallization. They get cut off before final machining in the end. Just a guess.

Smaller reminds me of a hydraulic manifold, especially if ends ported as well.
The other clearly is a real serious horse bit; real serious!

Or not. . .looks like a latch of some type with counterweights.

Like Frank said the smaller piece may be a hydraulic manifold and the other maybe a brake calliper of some description.

Looks very similar to a brake master cylinder and caliper.

The smaller piece looks like a master cylinder that has been cast but not yet drilled, bored, and tapped. Was your friend into building cars or car components?

That introduces another possibility; could those be cores, elements of sand castings to produce cavities?

Yes, the smaller one reminds me of an master cylinder from an older VW beetle.
