Appreciate your remarks, Hemmjo. I can only say that the pencil sharpeners I have tried have often broken the point, but of course this happens with using a knife. If a pencil gets even slightly damp, it may well split. And graphite is slippery! When draughting, I use a small nail file to touch up a pencil. I keep lots of pencils in workshops, and at some point during the day will have lost all of them. I can’t put one behind my ear, but have tried to acquire the habit of putting them in my back pocket. It should have been drummed into me at an early age.

Hemmjo woke me up with his treatise on pencils. A forgotten but useful tool, to be sure.
Admittedly, I'd never thought of knocking portions of a flat pencil down with a knife, to finish in a pointer.
Likewise, never occurred to me to haul out and rebuild a flat sharpener. The blades don't act sharp what-so-ever, and a shot of silicone lube won't attract shavings.
