You come up on a spot in the road in dark shadow and notice that half of the road is washed or eroded away, wouldn't that be enough to make you just a little bit cautious of a dark shadow completely across the road just a little ways ahead?

If I saw the deep pit on the left before the pit across the road I would at least slow down.
Seems to me the driver slowed down quite a bit.
