A much older and simpler process.
Each strand of the loose end is separated and would around the two wires, then the next is separated out, rinse and repeat until all wires have been exhausted. VERY OLD SCHOOL. This the way it was done back in the day!!

And when you stop and think about it, the separating off each strand and winding it around is far more resistant to pulling the cable out of the EYE.
There has been recorded cases where the bolted on retainers have slipped but I have never heard of the split wire winding method ever slipping.

A back spliced eye is very secure, can be hard to do in the field. Wire rope clamps are dependable alternative, avoiding the most common mistakes, including:
Not torquing to the manufacturer’s expectations
Not using the recommended number of clips
    Incorrect spacing between clips
Saddle is on the incorrect end of the rope
Incorrect amount of turnback when forming an eye
Using the wrong type of clip for the application
Not matching the clip size to the wire rope size
Failing to cycle the rope and regularly tighten the clips

I can back eye splice up to about a 3/4 " wire rope just about as fast or in most cases faster than the proper number of clips can be installed as long as I have a vice.
One key factor if a thimble is to be involved in the eye splice is to leave it out until last then bend the flange end on 1 side work the thimble in with a hammer then reform the ends Then seize the tails with a hangman's knot
Never try to tell me it can't be done
When I have to paint I use KBS products

My comment on how in by gone days the Thimble Eye splice in a wire cable under tension was done.
Firstly in those days making a wire splice using a marlin spike and interleaving the separated strands into the running line was common. However doing this in a line under tension can be extremely difficult. hence the Wrapped wire splice as you have illustrated was necessitated. The Alternate process I suggested was devised as expedient and cost saving method.
