It is fun to watch someone who knows what they are doing and make it look easy.
I have never used coal. What little "blacksmithing" I have done has been with gas. It seems like burying the work in the burning hot coals heats up more quickly and without the "roar" of a gas fired forge. I bought a couple of bags of "nut coal" to play with when tractor supply had it over winter. I have also seen wood fired forges. I have LOTS of wood to burn. But have not had time yet to play with any of it.
Just curious.
