Not really making a tool so much as making an existing tool better and more versatile
We've all had to clamp a piece of round stock to a flat surface for one reason or another
For the easiest way to do this I have found that a small "V" ground or filed into the foot of the c clamp I have made groves in the button but I find that when I absolutely have to use the button end to a round part I normally will take a section of halved pipe and flat bar then weld those together to form a holding surface
When grooving the foot of a C clamp it needs to be just deep enough to insure the clamp does not slip
