What we have here is evidence of an extremely poor preventive maintenance inspection program.

likely to have been a failed tail shaft UJ. Dropped at the front....no drop restraint, and it acts like a jack when it digs in the road.

I missed seeing a semi drop both the trailer axles by a couple minutes one morning. It was right in the middle of Iowa City morning traffic, westbound on I80. Luckily, no cars or pick ups were tailgating him when it happened. The trailer was sitting on the deck about 200 yards west of where the axles stopped and only one lane was blocked.

that happens all too frequently with van trailers that have sliding axles some flatbeds have had the same thing happen as well the driver slides his axles to adjust the weight then fails to make sure the locking pins have properly seated If he has them slid far enough forward once he hits his brakes the axles stop but the momentum of the truck and trailer carry it fast enough to rip past the safety stops and the dot bar
