Clearly, either the bracket was not machined square, or the casting distorted afterwards. (This is not the original bracket, the original cracked and this one was from another bench drill, which was scrapped - because the spindle was damaged.
I’d like to tip my cap to Winky, who posted yesterday an ideal solution, but unfortunately I don’t have his facilities or expertise to build that project, so my solution was to make a wedge from the remains of a tabletop - I used my big adze for that, it hadn’t had an outing for a long time.
I don’t really need to drill precisely and I have another bench drill which is better for that.
However, if I do need a bit more accuracy, I can true the table with a jack and a cranked pointer.
